In 2016, Guffogg began a series of paintings that were based primarily on the movements of light. The paintings are also informed from the movements of his hand, arm, and body. They are made without any preliminary sketches, making each image a dance of the subconscious. In that sense, they become figurative paintings, because the calligraphic movements he paints are informed by his physicality in that moment. These painted ribbons create a surface that light can reflect from and cast shadows onto.

Shane Guffogg was born in Los Angeles, California, and raised on an exotic bird farm in the San Joaquin Valley. His interest in painting began while a teenager, when he traveled to Europe and the former Soviet Union and was exposed to the Masters. Guffogg received his B.F.A. from Cal Arts, and during his studies, he interned in New York City. Shane relocated to Los Angeles, where he lived in Venice Beach and worked as a Studio Assistant for Ed Ruscha from 1989 until 1995.
